Financial Statements The company that I have chosen to portray in my key assignment is the Adelphia Communications Corporation. The Adelphia Communications Corporation was a cable television company headquartered in Coudersport, Pennsylvania. It was owned by John Rigas and was founded in 1952; Adelphia became one of the largest cable companies in the United States. In 2002 Adelphia Corporation filed bankruptcy as a result of internal corruption. Shortly after filing bankruptcy the company headquarters was moved to Greenwood Village, Colorado. Time Warner Cable and Comcast officially acquired the majority of Adelphia’s revenue-generating assets in July, 2006. By spring, they involved the authorities who took the case to a grand jury. Adelphia Communications Corporation clearly broke all the rules and laws that govern business today. The chief executive should have taken more responsibility for the actions of the people that run the company. Adelphia could have hired outside auditors to keep detailed records of all internal and external activities that involve the finances and resources of the company. By hiring outside companies to handle the books and finances there are unbiased opinions and accountability has to be adhered to. Establishing a rule that company employees or owners cannot purchase their own stock at lower prices or that the purchase be made through reputable companies so that there is an undisputable paper trail to follow. All this goes back to the code of ethics that the company has put into place and that they are expected to follow. It is truly integrity and honesty issue, if you cannot trust the founders of the company then the company is destined for failure. Another recommendation for the Adelphia Company would be to have cyber security officers monitoring all the computerized activity that was taking place on a daily basis. About a month ago, the Dalai Lama said something about women that is just now making the rounds on Twitter. His statement, The world will be saved by the western woman, was delivered during the Vancouver Peace Summit 2009, which opened on the morning of Sunday, September 27th. Although Im still trying to track down a transcript of the speech containing the above statement, the Dalai Lama participated in more than one panel discussion that day, and the event most likely to have provoked such a strongly worded declaration was the Nobel Laureates in Dialogue: Connecting for Peace presentation held that afternoon. Moderated by former Irish president and peace activist Mary Robinson, the panel discussion featured four Nobel Peace Prize Laureates: the Dalai Lama (who won in 1989); Mairead Maguire and Betty Williams, founders of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement and winners of the Nobel in 1976; and anti-landmine crusader Jody Williams, an American peace prize winner in 1997. If the western woman statement were made in the context of the Dalai Lamas appearance with these extraordinary women, the words would seem less stunning than sensible. Truly, these western women have already changed the world, and have been doing so for more than three decades. Writing for the Interaction Institute for Social Change (IISC) blog, executive director Marianne Hughes ponders the idea of the aging women as hag (originally a representation of feminine power) and how it relates to the Dalai Lamas statement: Im not entirely sure what he meant...but I am wondering if when he travels across the globe and sees so many of our sisters impoverished and repressed he sees western women of all ages in a position to speak out for justice and to take on the responsibilities of the hag... to take loving care of the planet and its people. The Dalai Lamas comment about western women was not the only notable pro-female statement he made during the summit. In the Vancouver Sun,  Amy OBrian quotes others including a call for increased emphasis on the promotion of women to positions of influence. In response to a moderators question about what he sees as priorities in the quest for world peace, heres what the Dalai Lama said: Some people may call me a feminist...But we need more effort to promote basic human values — human compassion, human affection. And in that respect, females have more sensitivity for others pain and suffering. World-saving aside, women do what they do because its work that needs to be done. None of them do it with an eye toward winning a Nobel Peace Prize, but the acknowledgment is valuable in that it draws attention to these efforts and eases the ever-present fund-raising struggle...and recruits more followers, like those who are retweeting the Dalai Lamas statement. Hopefully every woman who forwards those words will dig down deep enough to find the source of his inspiration and understand that he honors real women whose work continues day in, day out...regardless of whether theyre in the limelight or not.

Jackson’s success in â€Å"The Lottery† comes from her ability to keep the reader in the dark about the evils, until the very end. She has masterfully set up what the reader believes as a pleasant event. But, it is not until the ending, can the reader see the foreshadowing of the evils to come. Through the use of foreshadowing, Jackson is able to contribute to the story s overall effect of suspense and a shocking ending. One way Jackson creates foreshadowing is through the use of diction in order to reveal the truth behind the lottery. Jackson writes, â€Å"Mr. Summers was very good at all this; in his clean white shirt and blue jeans, with one hand resting carelessly on the black box. He seemed very proper and important as he talked interminably†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (2) By using the word seemed, she indicates that how he is dressed, and what he is here to do, do not match up. She then goes on to write, ‘â€Å"Well now.† Mr. Summers said soberly, â€Å"guess we better get started, get this over with, so’s we can go back to work. In my eighteen years of my life, this summer has by far been the most memorable. It was filled with many great memories during these past three months. This summer was filled with a lot of fun, excitement, nerves, and sadness. Summer started one week early, but other than that it was pretty much the same as every other summer. I spent a lot of my time working, with my friends and family, and in the gym. This year was my fourth year working as a lifeguard at the Winner city pool. Every year I have worked, we only had to jump in for kids around three times the whole summer, and this year we jumped in over ten times. I had to jump into the deepest part of the pool, which is twelve feet deep and grab a little boy who started sinking after he jumped off the diving board. It was not hard because he was light and I could just grab his arm and pull him to the ladder but it was very scary, and I was a little shaken up afterwards. Also this year I did my third year of private swimming lessons. Usually I give around ten to twelve lessons a summer and this year I doubled that and had twenty-seven kids for lessons. Lessons were very hard to schedule this year since I was so busy so working at the pool and teaching kids basically consumed my whole summer.
